North Suburban Medical Center Is Five-Star Recipient For Sepsis, Appendectomy, Heart Failure And Respiratory Failure Care

North Suburban Medical Center is 5-star rated for Sepsis, Appendectomy, Heart Failure and Respiratory Failure outcomes according to a national report released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. This is the third year in a row that North Suburban has received this recognition for Appendectomy Care (2019-2021), and the second year in a row North Suburban has received this recognition for Sepsis Treatment (2020-2021).

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and also analyzes outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states.

This analysis shows that patients treated at hospitals receiving a 5-star rating have a lower risk of dying and a lower risk of experiencing one or more complications during a hospital stay than if they were treated at hospitals receiving a 1-star rating in that procedure or condition. From 2017 through 2019, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average, 218,785 lives could potentially have been saved and complications in 148,681 patients could potentially have been avoided. *

In the areas where North Suburban Medical Center received 5-star recognition, using data from 2017 through 2019, and in comparison, to hospitals with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), Healthgrades found that:

1) Patients being treated for Heart Failure have a 60.5% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-house mortality for Heart Failure Care;

2) Patients being treated for Sepsis have a 38.9% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-house mortality for Sepsis treatment;

3) Patients being treated for Respiratory Failure have a 49.8% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-house mortality for Respiratory Failure; and

4) Appendectomy patients have a 68.2% lower risk of experiencing complications than if they were treated in hospitals with a 1-star rating.

“Hospital quality has never been more important, and consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of researching where they receive care before they visit a hospital for a specific procedure or condition,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Hospitals that receive a Healthgrades 5-star rating demonstrate exceptional outcomes and their ability to provide quality care for patients.”

“We have a great team of experts at North Suburban who work hard to provide safe and compassionate care and we are honored to be recognized for these clinical specialties,” said Vernon Naake, MD, Chief Medical Officer at North Suburban Medical Center. “To have our care recognized by an external organization is a great honor and is a great reflection of our team’s unwavering dedication to care like family with every patient, every day.”

In addition to these recent 5-star awards, North Suburban has also been recognized by Healthgrades as a 5-Star recipient for Vaginal Delivery for three years in a row (2018-2020), has been named a Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek magazine, and has also received a number of other quality accolades over the years.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected).
