United Home Services discusses the Importance of Chimney Cleaning During the Winter Months
As the cold creeps in, homeowners turn to their furnace, wood-burning stoves, and fireplaces to heat their homes and stay comfortable. But according to UHS, many homeowners are unaware of the hidden dangers lurking inside of their chimney.

According to data from the National Fire Protection Association, over 53,000 home structure fires, equating to over $893 million in property damage and the loss of 400 lives. These fires were attributed to home heating, with the leading factor contributing to home heating fires being a “failure to clean creosote from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys”.

This season, United Home Services (UHS) highlights the importance of chimney cleaning during the winter months, educating the public and doing its part to prevent avoidable loss of property and lives.

Chimney Cleaning Services: why winter cleaning is so important

As the cold creeps in, homeowners turn to their furnace, wood-burning stoves, and fireplaces to heat their homes and stay comfortable. But according to UHS, many homeowners are unaware of the hidden dangers lurking inside of their chimney.

As fall transitions to winter, pests and animals often seek shelter from the harsh winter weather. To a bird or squirrel, for example, a chimney may look like the ideal shelter to build a nest. Dry leaves, twigs, fur and other items are the perfect kindling needed for a single spark to ignite and set flame to a home.

Winter is also a time when homeowners rely more heavily on their fireplaces and chimneys, putting them to greater use than in milder months. This increased use can accelerate the buildup of ash, soot, particulates, and the oh so dangerous creosote. All of which represent a stealthy and dangerous ticking time bomb capable of causing catastrophic damage and even loss of life.

Chimney Cleaning and Inspection – regular annual inspections can save lives

According to the experts at UHS, it takes surprisingly little buildup of creosote glazing to create the potential for a fire. In other cases, regular wear from old age or homes settling can cause damage to chimney liners, making them susceptible to transferring fire-starting heat and carbon monoxide into the home.

Regular inspections can catch these and other issues before they become a serious problem, quickly addressing the situation both reliably and affordably.

As for how often a homeowner should have their chimney ‘swept’ or cleaned, the National Fire Protection Association says that, “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.”

However, there are other signs indicating the need for chimney cleaning. Factors such as climate, pests and animal activity, and frequency of use, as well as the type of wood or other fuel burned, can play a large role in when and how often a homeowner should have their chimney swept.
