Long Covid Patients Find Relief from Revolutionary Neuromodulation Treatment
A recent study published by the Laboratory of Neurophysiology & Movement Biomechanics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium has discovered a new Neuromodulation treatment which can reverse symptoms of Long-COVID syndrome. Until now, there have been no proven treatments for this persistent and chronic syndrome.

LONDON – June 22, 2021 – Long-COVID syndrome has become increasingly prevalent as a by-product of acute infection with COVID-19. Over 1 million people have reported suffering Long-COVID symptoms in the UK, with 400,000 of those cases contracting the coronavirus more than a year earlier.

The study at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and Human Waves Clinic analyzed the impact of Neuromodulation on 20 patients suffering from Long-COVID symptoms. Neuromodulation achieves therapeutic effects through modulation of the autonomic nervous system, by sending targeted electrical impulses to the vagus nerve. Researchers utilized proprietary technology from Parasym, a neurotechnology company focused on the development and commercialization of Neuromodulation devices to address a range of serious health issues.

Results of the study found crippling Long-COVID symptoms improved significantly in all 20 patients who participated. It presents an exciting new development in the treatment of Long-COVID using neuromodulation.

Patients experienced significant improvement in their symptoms such as fatigue and depression, as well as objective physiological parameters of blood oxygen saturation and muscular strength, allowing them to return to their previous professional and physical activities.

“The results of this study are very exciting – Long Covid is a massive problem and we’re motivated to help as many people as possible through the use of our technology. This type of bioelectric treatment represents a new wave of medicine that has applications to many other conditions linked to autonomic nervous system function, like cardiovascular disease and mental health. We aim to build on this work and provide relief to the millions of people with persistent COVID symptoms.” said Nathan Dundovic, Co-founder of Parasym.

The development of long-COVID symptoms appears to be partly due to long-lasting impairment of the nervous system, as the virus can persist in neural tissue long after the acute symptoms have subsided. Most common symptoms include fatigue, cognitive issues, chronic pain and shortness of breath.

“Long-COVID syndrome appears more and more as a new epidemic problem that follows the acute infection with COVID-19. According to recent data, it affects about one-third of all those infected, even those who had only moderate symptoms during the acute phase of the disease. In many patients, Long-COVID syndrome is very debilitating with uncertain improvement,” write the authors of the study.

“Until now, there were no validated therapeutic tools for Long-COVID. We present here the first evidence of a potent therapeutic tool, where we observed that Neuromodulation dramatically alleviates most of the symptoms in less than 14 days.”

Neuromodulation defines a category of drugs/devices that can regulate the brain for therapeutic benefit. The treatment works directly on the nervous system by delivering electrical impulses to a targeted area of the body.

Neuromodulation is a rapidly evolving field, attracting interest from Elon Musk with his newest venture Neuralink, and Parasym’s technology, a type of wearable non-invasive Neuromodulation, is ground-breaking and has been specifically targeted to treat Long-COVID symptoms.

Prior to treatment, some participants reported they became unable to speak previously known foreign languages. This study revealed that Neuromodulation alleviated the symptoms of Long-Covid after 6 to 10 sessions of approximately 35 minutes. Remission remained stable even 7 days after ending treatment.

Long-COVID patient Dimitri shares his story:

Dimitri, a Study Participant, caught coronavirus in March 2020 and was later declared cured of acute Covid-19. But before neuromodulation treatment, he still suffered multiple symptoms.

“The doctor I was seeing could only suggest it might be anxiety, angst or stress. That’s all he could see, because there simply wasn’t enough information around. I really had the impression it would never end. But now I can even go running again, up to 10-15 km a day!”

About the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and Human Waves Clinic

The Université libre de Bruxelles is a French-speaking research university in Brussels, Belgium. ULB is one of the two institutions, which trace their origins to the Free University of Brussels, founded in 1834 by Belgian lawyer Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. Human Waves is a spin-off of the Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Biomechanics of Movement of the Faculty of Sciences of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, founded in 2012. The company develops products and offers services from neurosciences and with very diverse applications. Our activities fall into three main categories: Human Performance, Human Health, Human Engineering.
