In Xiaoshan district in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang province, river protection involves not just the 700 local officials in charge of the local rivers and lakes, but the entire local population.

At the beginning of the year, Xiaoshan started piloting a “green water coin system”.

Under this system, river chiefs, volunteers and other local residents are encouraged to upload their experiences in river protection, the problems they faced in river protection, and suggestions to improvement river management on the mobile application “River Protection”.

Those who contribute will be rewarded with virtual tokens that can be exchanged for gifts.

“Because of this, more residents have participated in river protection. Through the app, they can also learn more about the river-chief system,” said a staff member from the Xiaoshan river management office.

As of the end of July, 69,680 people had registered at the app, among whom 1,610 applied for the role of river chief while 422 applied to be river protection volunteers. A total of 7,084 problems were submitted.

The app also serves as a platform where information about public welfare activities is published. To date, notices about 81 activities have been issued.

Suoqian town in the district launched regular river patrol activities, which have attracted more than 1,500 local residents, on the app.
