Geometric patterns, bold strokes, bursts of color, and the use of multiple mediums – these are the signatures of Dipo Doherty’s contemporary African art which strives to interpret modern living and the human form through the lens of his West African heritage.

Doherty’s second solo exhibition, Finding Home, continues this theme with a particular focus on the artist’s journey as a newly arrived immigrant in an increasingly multicultural environment.

Reflecting on his transitional state and path to cultural assimilation, the works feature stylized, geometric forms and surreal landscapes where the human body is reimagined in various configurations, and space is a constantly shifting, fluid entity, almost an independent character.

Finding Home can be viewed as the outer interpretation of my inner dialogue as an immigrant navigating his newfound status as a minority and member of the African American diaspora. It is my humble attempt to initiate a dialogue between two distinct yet interconnected cultures,” explains emerging Nigerian artist Dipo Doherty.

From exploring sports culture (Midnight Dues, 2022) to referencing contemporary African American art (Radiant Child, 2022), the works constituting Doherty’s second solo exhibition aim to inspire conversation about the experiences of Blackness across the ages, the ties that bind the African to the North American continents, and how that defines his identity, and that of his fellow immigrants.

“For me, the migrant experience goes beyond one of displacement and disconnection. It is about immersing myself in multiculturalism and exploring multiple geographic, cultural, and linguistic levels. It is about seeing home as temporal, embodying diverse cultural realities and relearning cultural frameworks,” continues Dipo.

“I am constantly rediscovering and redefining myself amidst a steady mix of influences, journeying from transient displacement to acceptance. While my exhibition aims to confront and resolve feelings of dislocation, home here is not a settled thing. Rather, Finding Home invokes a sense of continuity, situating self, and belonging in unraveling states of possibility,” concludes Dipo.
