On the first day of the 2023 APSARA Conference, the three main exhibition halls were bustling with people, taking photos, visiting exhibitions, experiencing, and explaining, creating a vibrant scene. As the forefront technology showcase of the cloud computing industry, the conference not only attracted industry elites, technical experts, and enthusiasts from various fields in China, but also drew “tech enthusiasts” from around the world, eager to explore over 3,000 new technologies and products in key industrial sectors. A student observation group from major colleges and universities in Xihu District became a highlight of the exhibition, visiting, observing, and exchanging experiences.

“We arrived early in the morning, and everyone did their homework in advance. We heard that there are many awe-inspiring products here,” said Milei, a PhD student at Zhejiang University who has been studying in Hangzhou for six years and is fluent in Chinese. He served as the captain of the student observation group, which consisted of members of the “Abroad Path Leaders” student public welfare platform. After the conference notice was released, they autonomously signed up, as they were all deeply interested in cloud computing, AI technology, and industrial practices.

In the “Artificial Intelligence” themed hall, a series of scene applications revolving around the language mega-model “Tongyi Qianwen” amazed Milei. “The development of mega-model technology in China is remarkable, and AI software is available in various professional fields.” He experienced the creative power of “Tongyi Qianwen” on-site. He inputted “APSARA Conference” as the keyword, and within a few seconds, a whole composition was generated effortlessly. “If we had this technology earlier, I would have spoken Mandarin even more fluently.”

Next to him, Lena, a student from Equatorial Guinea, had a great time with AI painting. By simply inputting text or simple graphics, the system intelligently recognized and provided a wealth of reference materials for painting. Lena casually drew a simple cat, and a large number of cat-related resources appeared in the gallery. “The recognition capability is powerful, and I now have the confidence to explore a new hobby.” In addition to being a student at Zhejiang University, this African girl is also an internet celebrity anchor, recommending excellent Chinese products to the world in Spanish and has garnered a significant number of fans. While exploring the exhibition, she couldn’t help but take photos and share these magical technological experiences on Instagram, Facebook, and other social platforms, sharing China’s new technological experiences with the world.

“The “Industrial Innovation” themed hall featured many products that focused on immersive experiences. Mada, a Sudanese student majoring in communication engineering, was particularly interested in VR glasses. Once he put on the VR glasses, he “entered” a virtual parallel world and became extremely excited, moving his hands and feet. “The visuals are very realistic, the architecture and character images are lifelike, the movements are smooth, and there is even haptic feedback. It was my first time experiencing such advanced VR technology,” he said.

Sophia, who had attended the APSARA  Conferenceback  in 2017, appeared much calmer this time. However, she was still amazed by the “Youth Li Bai,” a digital human, as the collision of culture and technology allowed the exhibition to engage with the audience in a completely new way. For international students, traditional Chinese culture such as ancient poetry poses a certain level of difficulty. Now, with the elegant “Youth Li Bai,” they can listen to his stories and recitations, making the learning process more accessible and allowing them to feel the emotions and warmth through dialogue, thus enhancing cultural dissemination more deeply and extensively.

It is understood that the team belongs to the “Abroad Path Leaders” platform, which was created within the context of the “Belt and Road” initiative. The term “Abroad Path Leaders” has a dual meaning. It refers to both Xihu District, where they originated, and also hopes that international students will consider China as their second home in their studies and daily lives. The goal to “lead the way” is to share the good stories and exciting experiences happening in China with the rest of the world.
