The PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute, a project of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the government of Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu province, opened at the aviation and aerospace industrial park in Wuxi Airport Economic Development Zone on November 2.

At the opening ceremony, the institute signed agreements with several enterprises to launch industry-university-research cooperation. These partners include: Wuxi Hyatech Co Ltd; APALT; CHISON Medical Technologies Co Ltd; Jiangsu Sunlant Bioengineering Co Ltd; and I·Campus.

PolyU, located in Hong Kong, is a public research university with a history of 85 years. In September 2022, the government of Wuxi and PolyU signed an agreement via a video conference call to jointly set up the institute. The partnership underscores a synergy between Wuxi’s economic strength and PolyU’s world-leading education and research excellence.

The institute, with a usable area of about 2,800 square meters, integrates research, education and other functions. It aims to become a top domestic strategic science and technology innovation platform, which focuses research and development of core technologies with proprietary intellectual properties in the areas of aerospace, biomedical technology, advanced manufacturing, new materials, artificial intelligence and new energy by leveraging advantageous innovation resources from around the globe.

The institute will also roll out a PolyU engineering doctorate programme designed for working professionals, establish an industry cultivation base, and work with governments, enterprises and schools to facilitate multi-specialty collaboration and commercialization of research outcomes. It aspires to develop into a sustainable science and technology innovation base.

The innovation education and research center of the institute is expected to launch its initial student recruitment later this year, with the first and second cohorts of Ph.D. students scheduled to complete their studies and obtain the engineering doctorate from PolyU by the end of 2027.

The institute has a council composed of representatives of PolyU, Wuxi National Hi-Tech District and partner universities, research institutes and enterprises among other organizations. It was formed based on the cooperation agreement between PolyU and Wuxi National Hi-Tech District as the supreme decision-making body of the institute. The chairman and members of the council will be appointed for a term of five years.

On the opening day, Professor Xiaowen Fu, the head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of PolyU, gave the participants a report on PolyU’s doctorate programs for cultivation of leading engineering talents in industry, academia and research. Ming Zhang, the head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, chair professor of biomechanics and director of the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology of PolyU, gave a talk on PolyU’s studies on biomedical engineering and industrial, academic and research outcomes.
