Maddie Binning is News Director for Muskoka411 News, cottage country’s go-to source for breaking and community news.

Though Muskoka is a place known for creating summer memories, the region has a vibrant year-round community as well and Maddie Binning, News Director for Muskoka411 News, has been working to document everything the area has to offer since 2018.

Maddie Binning is an editor, writer and photographer, and her work in journalism spans back to highschool. She worked her way up to Editor in Chief for the school paper and was named Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Educators of Minnesota in 2015. She later graduated from Ryerson University’s School of Journalism and in November 2018, she started working for Muskoka411, a Canadian digital news platform that serves as cottage country’s go-to source for breaking news. She oversees the news staff, approves story ideas and edits in-house and submitted work.

“I am so pleased to have Maddie as our News Director as her work and knowledge allow us to grow, expand and create the best quality journalism,” said Stefan Ottenbrite, founder and CEO of Muskoka411 News. “Through her writing, photography and other editorial contributions, Maddie has helped grow Muskoka411 News as a brand while providing impactful coverage of local news.”

During her time with Muskoka411, Maddie has photographed many events, including various local festivals, a community picnic with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a number of community events. In addition to contributing photography and editorial judgment, she has worked to provide valuable community coverage in a variety of areas including wildlife and the environment, health and disability, and more.

She works with groups like the Muskoka Shoebox Project, Tourette Canada, Canadian Blood Services and more to highlight important local events and support impactful causes. Her work has led to a direct increase in donations and volunteers for organizations like Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, the Comfie Cat Shelter and more.

Maddie covers stories from off the beaten path, such as a local pilot using his plane to help others, while also covering hyper local news, including stories on the future of beloved local businesses like the Balacade and Peter’s Players. In addition, she strives to find local connections to make national and global stories suit Muskoka411’s audience in and around cottage country.

“I’m grateful to the people across Muskoka who have been willing to share their stories with me as well as the Muskoka411 audience that always rallies around the people and causes I report on,” Maddie said. “I’ve had the chance to share such amazing moments with my sources and colleagues, and I look forward to learning more every day.”
